Please ignore the PSP bashing by Nintendo in this link (Nintendo has often bashed their competitors in press events like these) and concentrate on the Nintendo DS sales figures:

I really think this means the DS will indeed sell (well it already SOLD but I mean like sell as a viable strong platform). I also wonder about the technology comment.... when you think about it, it makes sense *to an extent*.
Christ, Nintendo really just needs to shut the hell up about the games market already. Eight-year old retards on Pokemon message boards have more credibility these days. Do they seriously think anyone believes their bullshit anymore? "There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!"
...where was I?
Anyway, I don't think there was ever any serious chance that the DS would be a Virtual Boy. It's gimmicky in a way, but the gimmick isn't so hardcore that it precludes "normal" games too. It's a lot more powerful than the GBA and it has some neat design ideas. The problem for Nintendo is that in three months another company will introduce a handlheld that's way more powerful, looks nicer, does more (MP3s, movies), has a real analog stick (thumb-thingy doesn't count, kthxbye), a big, fantastic screen, lots more storage, and immense developer support. And it only costs ~$50 more.
Nintendo needs to turn the touch screen / dual screen functionality into a killer app, and fast. Just using it for maps or window dressing while all the main action is happening on just one screen defeats the purpose of building a different system in the first place.

You know I was checking the latest PSP specs at IGN... man. Really, the PSP just crushes the DS *BAD*. As in several times bad. Also looks like the battery life won't be *that bad* (still bad but not pathethic bad).
The touch screen and a price drop can save it though. I mean, it's not like the DS is all useless. They got the sound and cpu right this time. And also Nintendo is less prone to "make everything 3d" as a mandate, which is honestly a good thing.
